How to Clean Natural Stone Tile?

With proper care any natural stone will hold its beauty for a lifetime.

We recommend sealing all natural stone products before & after grouting, and at least 2-3 times a year depending on application. Always test sealers in a small area or spare piece of tile before applying to whole area.

Chemically sensitive mild PH cleaners should be used when cleaning natural stone. Always avoid using harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners. Never use bleach or vinegar on natural stone products. Warm water and microfiber cloths are ideal when cleaning the surface. Do not use scrubbing pads as this may scratch the surface. Keeping the surface clean regularly will help prevent scratching from everyday grime.

How to Install Natural Stone?

Download sheet

With proper installation your project will be a work of art to admire.

Installation is acceptance of the materials, in it’s grade, color , finish, & suit-ability. This is standard the tile industry. Any concerns should be addressed prior to installation.

Any material questions should be addressed with your natural stone installer first. Please get in touch with us if you have remaining concerns. Color, texture, size, and finish variations are normal in natural stone. If you have any concerns about obvious problems, do not install. These recommendations are merely meant to point you in the correct direction for a suitable installation. Every project is different; you will need a qualified natural stone installer who can give you the precise specifications for your project. For specific natural stone installation procedures tailored to the requirements of your project, please see the most recent edition of the TCNA Handbook. We suggest always ordering 15% additional tile for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

◊If you did not order enough, do not start installation until you have all the material on site.

◊Dry Lay all tiles prior to install. Pull from all boxes to achieve the best overall blend of color. All tile requires blending, as they naturally vary from piece to piece. It is the responsibility of the installer to remove materials from packaging & dry lay all materials to obtain the customer’s approval of the blend before any tile is installed. This procedure is common practice in the installation of tile & helps ensure the beauty of the finished installation.

◊Only white thin-set & unsanded grout should be used. When installing tiles make sure there is 95% or more thin-set on the back of the tile to achieve the best bond. For better bonding, wipe the back of each tile to remove any excessive dust.

◊Tiles with imperfections should be set aside & used for cuts. Cut edges can be sanded to remove jagged-ness.

◊Recently Installed tile will appear darker after installation. This is due to the moisture from the thin-set & is temporary. This may take up to 30 days depending on climate to completely dry.

◊Castelli Marble recommends the use of Bostik Products for setting materials.

Why do some natural stones have a resin backing?

Resin backing is sometimes applied to natural stone to reinforce it during processing, shipping, and installation. This backing often includes polyester, urethane, and epoxy. In some cases, a mesh is imbedded with the resin. Common stones that will have this are Nero St. Gabriel, Ven. Carrara, Calacatta, Statuary, etc.

These backings influence the adhesive that should be used during installation. The use of an epoxy thin set or additive is required for a proper install. It is strongly recommended for all products to do a small surface test with the selected setting prior to moving forward with installation. This ensures the compatibility and avoids staining issues.

Castelli Marble makes no expressed or implied warranty for any installation procedure and maintenance practice. It is the installer’s duty to validate the setting materials are compatible. The installer can refer to the TCNA Handbook for further information on installation of resin backed tile, we are available to assist with any questions that may arise.

If you have any questions on whether the batch of stone you selected has a resin backing, please contact us directly with the material selected, size, and quantity needed

Why is my Colorado Stone not drying?

Colorado Stone during manufacturing process uses a new technique to further strengthen the stone. This technique is called Soundstone and it is a complete impregnation of the stone that significantly improves the stone’s mechanical strength and reduces the material porosity. The final product after this process is much harder, less porous and more durable. This process does cause the stone to dry slower after install, and may take over 30 days to dry.
